Clearing forests for farms, roads, and mines moves people into closer contact with wildlife that can host new viruses and pathogens. Packing many people and animals into dense settlements and industrial farms boosts opportunities for viruses to jump and spread quickly. In my opinion, this study is a call to action for governments and international organizations to invest in better preparedness and response systems, particularly in vulnerable regions. It also highlights the need for better surveillance and early detection systems, as well as the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure in at-risk areas. From my perspective, the study raises a deeper question: how can we better prepare for the unknown threats that lie ahead? The WHO's priority list, which includes unknown threats under the placeholder name Disease X, is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done. In Europe, the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority focuses on climate-sensitive threats like Ebola, Zika, and Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever. However, the study suggests that we need to be prepared for a wider range of threats, including those that may emerge from the changing climate and land use patterns. In conclusion, the new disease risk map is a powerful tool that can help us prepare for the future. It highlights the regions most at risk and the countries that need the most support. But it also serves as a warning, reminding us that we are all vulnerable to the threats that lie ahead. As an expert, I think it is crucial that we take action now to strengthen our preparedness and response systems, and to invest in better surveillance and early detection systems.
