Smart Highway Tech to Cut Accidents on Golden Highway! (NSW Trial) (2026)

The Golden Highway, a vital artery connecting Newcastle to Dubbo, is undergoing a transformative trial with the introduction of smart highway technology. This cutting-edge system, known as the Rural Intersection Speed Zone (RISZ), aims to revolutionize road safety and traffic management in the Upper Hunter region, specifically at the Cassilis intersection. The trial, a first for New South Wales, is a response to the growing traffic challenges posed by the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) projects.

The RISZ system employs vehicle detection and variable speed limit signs to enhance safety at rural intersections. By sensing approaching vehicles on Ulan Road, the system alerts those on the Golden Highway, allowing for safer merging and reducing the risk of accidents. This technology is particularly crucial for the region's heavy vehicle traffic, which has been increasing due to the REZ developments.

Transport for NSW executive director John-Paul Ahern highlights the system's customization for Cassilis, a designated REZ route. The intersection experiences a high volume of heavy vehicles, including those involved in renewable energy, freight, and mining. Crash data reveals a concerning trend, with three serious accidents occurring in the last five years. The RISZ system, therefore, becomes a crucial tool to mitigate these risks.

NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison emphasizes the long-term benefits of this 'generational investment' in the road network. The Golden Highway, already receiving substantial funding, will undergo significant upgrades to accommodate the energy transition and the associated traffic. Ms. Aitchison believes that the RISZ system, while a cost-saving measure, will ultimately contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation network.

However, local resident Jane Hegarty remains cautious about the system's effectiveness. She suggests that it might be a temporary solution to save costs on turning lanes and awaits further evaluation of its impact on accident prevention. The trial, set to last for 12 months, will provide valuable insights into the system's performance and its potential to address the unique challenges of the Upper Hunter region's transportation infrastructure.
